Are Meta tags old hat?

In the last centaury Meta tags used to determine whether your site was a shattering success or a complete failure. Everyone was talking about them, telling you what to put in them and create tools to make the perfect set.

However these days they are not so good. Some search engines, the most notable of which being Google, don't even use Meta tags so all your lines of code are wasted on it.

So is it even worth writing Meta tags any more? Well, yes. Most search engines still use Meta tags, such as Search.com which uses nothing but Meta tags. And although Google doesn't use Meta tags for searches, it does sometimes use the description Meta tag to create a short description for your site.

However it is also important to add your keywords into your content, preferably at the start. If you can get your description and keywords before all your navigation links then you will be good for search engines that don't use Meta tags. This can be achieved by using layers.
